Evaluation, Documentation & Hours
Youth participants, volunteers and staff sign in and out when they partake in activities. Signin sheets,
for each program, include date, name, time in, time out and a description of the activity. Parents
complete a registration and permission form, and income verification. Referrals to and from agencies are
documented.
Community Bike Works' programs and goals address the
"40 Developmental Assets Youth Need to Succeed" by:
- providing services for the highest need elementary school children through partnerships with Central and Roosevelt Elementary Schools
- improved reading as demonstrated by our pre and post test
- requiring homework be completed in our Homework program
- having 30 minutes of every hour in our Reading & Homework Program spent on reading for pleasure
- one on one adult mentorship with three or more non-parent adults
- using youth as resources as mentors, youth volunteers and apprentices
- promoting youth service to others by working at city sponsored bike rodeos, participating in the city's 'adopt a block' and repairing bikes that are donated to others
- nurturing responsibility by signing the Earn a Bike contract
- receiving referrals from Allentown School District teachers and counselors to provide these services
Community Bike Works' programs require performance measurements.
All the children participating in the Reading & Homework Program will:
- Take a Reading Test at the beginning and end of the three month program
- 40 % of the children will show an increase in reading level of at least one grade
- Produce a writing project that will demonstrate the use of proper sentence structure and grammar
- Spend at least 50% of their time on reading development.
100% of the children in the Earn a Bike Program will demonstrate the ability to ride a bicycle
safely by:
- Successfully riding around obstacles without falling or hitting the obstacle
- Balancing a bicycle while riding at slow speeds without falling
- Performing successful emergency braking
- Properly signaling turns and stops
- Signing a contract to ride wearing a helmet
100% of the children in the Earn a Bike Program will demonstrate the ability to perform pre-ride bicycle
safety inspections that include checking for:
- Correct tire pressure
- Brakes that function properly
- The adequate tightness of seat, handlebar and front and rear axle nuts
Hours for on site activities:
- 3 pm to 8 pm during the school year
- 12 pm to 8 pm in the summer
Participants, girls and boys, are referred by Lehigh County Juvenile Probation, teachers, guidance
counselors, case workers and the Police Department.
