Community Bike Works

Community Bike Works was conceived by Allentown residents with backgrounds in education, drug abuse prevention, vocational training, mechanics, business, and community action. Community Bike Works develops and uses peer role models, adult mentors, and bicycles to draw boys and girls, ages 9 to 17, into the program and away from drugs, crime, and the streets.

Kids learn mechanics, develop business skills, commitment and responsibilities, and improve their employability. Through partnerships with the Catholic Charities Refugee Program and the Conference of Churches Linkage Program the kids provide needy residents with safety inspections and reconditioned bikes.

Kids even earn a recycled bike and new helmet for their efforts.

Community Bike Works' programs counter entitlement by showing a youngster that if you work, you are rewarded.

June 2009 marks our Fourteenth Year

Over the 14 years OUR KIDS have:

worked 68,125 hours at Community Bike Works
inspected 2,286 bikes at neighborhood rodeos
repaired and donated over 200 bikes locally
sent 790 bikes to Third World Villages
received three Governor's Safety Awards
earned E Town's E Award

Community Bike Works' retention rate over fourteen years is 82.2%. Of the 1,758 kids who began the 3 month Earn A Bike course, 1,446 finished to earn a bike and helmet.
