Entry into Community Bike Works is through Earn a Bike. Kids (ages 9-17)sign a contract and commit to a minimum of 24 hours in Earn A Bike. In twelve, two hour sessions, kids receive instruction in bike mechanics, bike safety, employment skills, communication skills and business concepts as they work on their bikes and help others fix their bikes. Teaching strategies include the mechanic's handbook, demonstrations and hands on activities. This work incentive program provides each participant the opportunity to earn a bicycle and helmet.      Objectives:

 
  • Bring 175 youths into the Earn a Bike program in 1 year
  • Have all Earn A Bike enrollees sign a contract committing to at least 24 hours of instruction in mechanics and safe riding skills and community service
  • Have 122 youths, 70% of Earn A Bike participants, earn a bike and new helmet
  • Have all youths who complete the Earn A Bike program display mastery of basic tool use and bicycle mechanics by passing practical and written evaluations
  • Have all youths who complete the Earn A Bike program demonstrate safe riding skills by passing a road test
  • Have all Earn A Bike participants assist peers in repairing bikes
  • 219 youths were in Earn A Bike, a 31% increase over last year
  • 81.3% of the kids who began Earn a Bike finished
